As an international non-profit, non-governmental organization, PEFC is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification, and providing mechanisms to trace material from the forest to the consumer. Created by small- and family forest owners in 1999, PEFC has grown to become the world’s largest forest certification system, covering more than 280 million hectares of forest area across the globe. This forest area supplies over 22,000 PEFC Chain of Custody certified companies with responsibly sourced forest-based products. The requirements in the PEFC forest management standard ensure the protection of biodiversity and tackle deforestation and illegal logging, while promoting local employment and gender equality and protecting the rights of forest workers. PEFC Chain of Custody certification allows to trace materials from sustainably managed forests through the supply chain to the final product. Responsible sourcing from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified forests is part of the solution to achieve sustainability in consumer goods sector.

Hye Jung Youn received her Ph.D. degree in Forest Products from Seoul National University in 2000, where her research focused on the flocculation of fibers and the flow behavior of headboxes. She worked as a senior researcher for Hansol Paper Co. before joining the department of Seoul National University in 2002. Since then, she has conducted research on papermaking science and engineering including wet-end chemistry, upgrading of recycled fibers, modification of pulp fibers and fillers, and strengthening of aged paper. Her current research focuses on the preparation, modification and application of cellulose nanofibers in different industries.
Neo Yang, P&G China Go To Market Package Innovation Director. He has been working in P&G for 16 years. He is the innovator of P&G China eCommerce SIOC package (little green box) and P&G reusable package (big green box). He is leading the P&G customization package, eCommerce package and reusable package innovation for all P&G brands in China.
Dr. ir. Pieter Samyn received Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering 2007 at Ghent University and followed an academic career at University Freiburg and Hasselt University, until 2021 when he joined the collective research center Sirris as a Senior Research Engineer. He has broad experience on the synthesis, processing and characterization of bio-based materials for composite and coating applications. His research focusses on surface functionalization and he subsequently led research projects on bio-inspired adhesion mechanisms, functional coatings for paper substrates and the development of (nano)composite materials from bio-based building blocks (cellulose, biopolymers). The applied industrial research currently focusses on formulation and processing of biobased resins for more sustainable paper coating formulations with enhanced performance and recyclability.
Mr. Xiaorong Wei embarked on his professional journey in 2008 at Evonik, following the completion of his Bachelor's degree in Applied Chemistry. With over 15 years of technical expertise in silica and silicate, he has honed his skills in their application in the paper industry. As his technical service role, he has been instrumental in resolving complex customer issues related to paper coating and wet-end paper application. Xiaorong has also designed guided formulation for paper coating customers with the successful business. He has been particularly focused on utilizing silica and silicate, which are produced using Evonik's unique technology, in direct thermal paper, inkjet coating RC paper, and décor paper. Additionally, he has explored the use of silica in water-based dispersion for inkjet coating. He fully understands the significance of sustainability in the use of silicate in paper products and aims to reduce energy consumption.
Mr. Benson Yu was appointed as the Director of PEFC China Initiative since April of 2007 and responsible for the promotion project of PEFC in China.
Before joining PEFC Mr. Yu worked in the timber trading, wood processing and forestry industry and for 14 years in China. From 2000 to 2007 he worked in IKEA as the Forestry Manager of IKEA Trading Greater China and the Wood Procurement Manager of IKEA Trading (North China). During this stage he involved in the process of Chinese forest certification and several important forestry projects related to forest certification promotion and standard setting.
Mr. Yu has a bachelor degree of Economics and a master degree of Forestry Science.
Yunlan has over 10 years’ experience in the pulp and paper industry with primary focus on market study, strategy planning and assessment, feasibility study, etc. She has lead and involved quite many projects in relation to market and opportunity assessment, operational analysis and strategy covering various pulp and paper grades and fibre-based products
An Engineer in Printing Technology and Post graduate in Packaging Technology, who has delivered innovations/Patents with Unilever, in the domain of RFID and is currently taking Private label innovations to the next level with Walmart. He leads the artwork development, package design And procurement currently, with an inclination towards innovative technologies, customer convenience and sustainability.
Alexey Vishtal is working at Mayr-Melnhof Board & Paper as a Head of Novel Packaging Development where his main focus is development of novel fibre-based packaging with barrier functionality to offer a viable alternative to difficult to recycle plastics. He has joined MM in early 2022 and before that spent almost 7 years with Nestlé leading fibre-based packaging in their research organization. Before that he held various positions in paper and related industries. Alexey has a paper engineering background and doctoral degree in paper physics and converting.
Paper & packaging industry professional with focus in products, portfolios, markets and strategy
Combines technical and commercial experience from paper and polymers with 10 years of international experience on paper and packaging field. Master's Degree in Forest Products Marketing and Management from University of Helsinki, Finland. Currently employed by Mondi Group as a Head of Product Portfolio Management for Flexible Packaging.
Dr. Warren Batchelor is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Biore-source Processing Research Institute of Australia (BioPRIA), part of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Monash University. He is also Director of Education in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. He is the chair of the Standards Australia PK-019 committee, which develops standards for the pulp and paper industry and is the Australian representative on the international com-mittee, TC6.
His major research interests are in sustainable materials, with a particular interest in materials from cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), with contributions including:
• Recyclability of CNF films and of paper-polymer laminates.
• Life-cycle analysis of materials and processes
• CNF characterisation methods including developing standards for CNFs.
• Paper mill biorefinery and CNF production.
• Methods for the rapid preparation of CNF sheets by spray coating and vacu-um filtration.
• Development of renewable, recyclable, CNF barrier layers to displace petro-leum-derived polymers in packaging.
• Nanoparticle-cellulose nanofibre composites for barrier applications, ultrafil-tration membranes, antimicrobial functional layers and photocatalytic deg-radation of organic contaminants.
Felix Lu has over 15 years‘ experience in packaging & printing industries, and has been taking various middle to senior roles of sales, marketing, business development and product development in local & multinational companies in Asia Pacific.
With his solid experience in market research and analysis, business strategy creation and new market development, Felix is working with clients and partners to deliver strategic analysis, innovative solutions and new business proposals in packaging, printing and related industries.
Felix joined in Smithers as project leader for Asia consultancy projects, and he is focusing on creating value to clients for packaging industry, combining a global and regional view. He is based in Shanghai, China.
Gang Chen PhD, professor and PhD supervisor, was the Vice Dean of School of Paper and Environmental Engineering at South China University of Technology (SCUT). Currently, he is the chief professor of specialty paper research team of South China University of Technology. He is the leader of the national teaching team, director of China Paper Society, and vice president of Guangdong Paper Industry Association.
He has been engaged in new technology of papermakeing and the research and application of the specialty paper and paper-based functional materials for a long time, including new technology of specialty paper, paper-based functional materials, paper coating technology and theory, multi-fiber mixed forming mechanism, nanocellulose preparation and application, optimization and application of papermaking chemicals, anti-counterfeiting technology of paper, and application of functional materials in papermaking process...
